   Résumé
   Une mutinerie dans une prison américaine, réprimée grâce à l'intervention d'un détenu qui est parvenu à s'amender en dépit de la pernicieuse influence de ses compagnons de cellule. Il sera tué au cours de l'émeute, mais son sacrifice n'aura pas été vain.
   Commentaire
   Le prototype du «film de prison», genre très prisé aux États-Unis (voir 20 000 ans sous les verrous, Je suis un évadé). Le bon y triomphe des méchants, la promiscuité de la vie carcérale est stigmatisée, et le problème de la réinsertion sociale des anciens convicts posé non sans courage. Big House fit l'objet de versions «doublées» (selon le principe en faveur à l'époque), mais l'américaine, qui bénéficie d'une solide interprétation, reste, de loin, la plus satisfaisante.
   Paul Fejos réalise les versions française et allemande du film, intitulées respectivement:
